Comes Full Circle
It would be nice if the implementation and management of a sound information governance program was as easy as the touch of a button. Unfortunately it isn’t. What is new in the eDiscovery | IG field however, is an updated Information Governance Reference Model that is the shape of a button – that is, it’s a circle! The importance of this cannot be overstated.
Developing policy when it comes to IG, it can be complicated, requires enforcement and stakeholder buy-in. Reference models help alleviate the 
stress associated with this process by establishing best practices and helping to create models for work flow and responsibility. Recently, the Electronic Discovery Reference Model was updated to include IG as an important (indeed integral) component of the eDiscovery | IG process. In the model (EDRM) it is now represented as a circle indicating its overall importance in the eDiscovery process. The circle suggests that a well – managed eDiscovery process MUST loop back to IG, both starting and ending with information governance.
The EDRM model touches on everything from the Identification, preservation and collection of information, to its processing, analysis and review. None of the steps (both those listed here and the remainder shown – see the attached model) are complete without the “loop back” the element of eDiscovery that returns to the start and end point, the circle of Information Governance. First launched in 2005, EDRM was created to correct the absence of standards and guidelines that existed in the eDiscovery marketplace. These new changes to the EDRM model are meant to help foster and create understanding about the critical role of IG and to aid in any discussions your team has about improving and enhancing your eDiscovery | IG processes.
